Buying furniture handles: what's important?
Anyone buying new furniture handles is also making a decision about color, shape, and material. These three factors determine whether a handle suits the furniture and the room. At Yessential, you'll find furniture handles in black, gold, stainless steel, chrome, wood, rose gold, and gunmetal, in round, square, and corner handle shapes, as well as classic and country-style variants. All handles are available with drilling distances from 64 mm to 640 mm, making them suitable for drawers and cabinet doors of all sizes. Installation is simple and only requires a screwdriver.
Step 1: Choose the right color
The color of the furniture handle is the first and most visible characteristic. Black is the most versatile choice: black handles fit almost any front color and create a strong, timeless contrast on light fronts. Gold immediately gives furniture a warmer, more sophisticated look and goes particularly well with white, cream, or dark green fronts. Brushed stainless steel is the most neutral option and combines well with all front colors because it is neither warm nor cold. Wooden handles in oak or walnut bring naturalness and warmth to an interior and are particularly popular in combination with white or light gray fronts. Rose gold is suitable for rooms where a softer, decorative metal accent is desired. Gunmetal is the darkest and most characteristic option and goes well with strong, dark interiors.
Step 2: Choose the right shape
Furniture handles come in three basic shapes, which differ in appearance and handling. Round bar handles have a cylindrical cross-section and are the softest, most organic shape. They suit rounded furniture fronts and interiors that emphasize coziness and naturalness. Square bar handles have an angular cross-section and appear more precise and functional. They are particularly suitable for modern kitchens and bathroom furniture with straight lines. Corner handles lie flat against the cabinet door and therefore require less depth than bar handles. They are particularly suitable for kitchen fronts with little space between the cabinet and the wall, as well as for a very flat, handleless look with subtle accents.
Step 3: Determine the correct drilling distance
The drilling distance, also called the center-to-center distance, is the distance between the center points of the two mounting screws. It is the most important measurement when buying handles. Measure the distance between the existing drill holes in your cabinet door or drawer with a ruler. For kitchen drawers, 96 mm and 128 mm are the most common measurements. For wall cabinet doors, 128 mm to 192 mm are used. For tall cabinet doors and pantry cabinets, drilling distances of 320 mm to 640 mm are suitable. At Yessential, all handles are available in several drilling distances. Use the filter options on this page to specifically search for the appropriate drilling distance.
Furniture handles for the kitchen
The kitchen is the room where furniture handles are used most intensively. Handles are touched many times a day here, with greasy or damp hands, and often need to be cleaned. For kitchens, we recommend handles with a matte, easy-care surface. Matte black handles like the Vasco Black and the Leonardo Black Deluxe are more fingerprint-resistant than high-gloss variants and retain their neat appearance even after intensive use. Stainless steel handles like the Marano Stainless Steel and the Remo Stainless Steel are also easy to clean and easily withstand grease splashes and frequent cleaning. For country-style kitchens, we recommend the Arturo Gold or the Arturo Black; for modern kitchens, the Leonardo Deluxe or the Enzo as a corner handle.
Furniture handles for the bathroom
In the bathroom, more compact handles are required because bathroom furniture is generally smaller than kitchen furniture. Drilling distances of 64 mm and 96 mm fit well with most bathroom furniture formats. For the bathroom, we recommend handles in stainless steel or black, as these surfaces are moisture-resistant and easy to clean. If you want a consistent color scheme in the bathroom, choose handles to match the faucet: black faucets with black handles, gold faucets with gold handles. Our Enzo series as a corner handle and the Remo series as a bar handle are particularly popular for bathroom furniture because their compact design is proportional to smaller fronts.
Furniture handles for bedrooms and living rooms
In the bedroom and living room, aesthetics and harmony are paramount. Handles are touched less frequently here than in the kitchen, so easy-care surfaces are less critical. Wooden handles made of solid oak or walnut are particularly popular in these rooms because they bring warmth and naturalness to the interior. The Arriero series in Oak and Walnut and the Lucasso series go well with dressers and wardrobes in light colors or wood tones. For a more elegant bedroom, gold handles like the Remo Gold Deluxe or the Marano Gold are an effective choice.
Frequently asked questions about furniture handles
How do I find out which drilling distance fits my furniture?
Measure the distance between the center points of the existing drill holes with a ruler or tape measure. If your furniture does not yet have drill holes, choose the drilling distance to match the width of the drawer or cabinet door. As a guide: for drawers up to 40 cm, 96 mm is common; for drawers up to 60 cm, 128 mm is common; for wide cabinet doors from 80 cm, 160 mm and more are sensible. All our handles can be filtered by drilling distance in the filter bar on this page.
Can I install furniture handles myself?
Yes. Installation only requires a screwdriver. Each handle is attached with two included screws from the inside of the cabinet door or drawer. The screws are guided through the existing drill holes and screwed into the handle's thread. Make sure that the screw length matches the thickness of your cabinet door. Standard screws have a length of 25 to 35 mm.
How many handles do I need for a kitchen?
Count all the drawers and cabinet doors in your kitchen. Each drawer and each cabinet door needs one handle. For a standard kitchen with 10 drawers and 8 cabinet doors, that's 18 handles. We recommend ordering two to three spare handles, as all our handles can also be reordered individually.
Which handles suit which kitchen style?
For modern, minimalist kitchens, we recommend the Vasco, the Leonardo Deluxe, or the Enzo as a corner handle. For country-style kitchens, the Arturo and the Marano in gold or black are suitable. For classic interiors with traditional furniture, the Daro Ceramic and the Alvaro with its curved profile are the most harmonious choice. For natural wood interiors, the wooden handles from the Arriero, Salgado, and Lucasso series are the most convincing option.
Are the furniture handles also suitable for older furniture?
Yes. As long as your existing furniture has drill holes at the appropriate drilling distance, our handles can be installed directly. Replacing handles is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to visually upgrade furniture. Especially for older kitchens in white or gray, a new handle in black or gold provides an immediate visual improvement without having to buy new furniture.
