When do you need a house number with letters?
Many addresses in Germany include a letter suffix, such as 12a, 7b, or 34c. This is particularly common for subsequently divided properties, semi-detached houses, end-of-terrace houses, and apartment buildings. In these cases, a house number without the corresponding letter is incomplete and can lead to problems with the delivery of mail and packages, as well as with emergency services finding the location. At Yessential, you will find letters in the same designs and materials as our house numbers – in black, white, gold, chrome, stainless steel, and concrete – so that the house number and letter form a cohesive visual unit.
Letters and house numbers in the same design
The most important principle for a house number with a letter suffix is visual consistency. The house number and letter should have the same height, the same font, and the same material so that the address appears as a whole. At Yessential, our letters are designed as a direct complementary product to the respective house number series. The spacing, proportions, and surface treatments are coordinated so that you can easily mount the house number and letter next to each other without creating a design discontinuity.
Which letters are relevant for house numbers?
In practice, almost exclusively lowercase letters are used for house number signs: a, b, c, d, and occasionally e or f. These letters arise when a property is subsequently subdivided and the new units receive sub-addresses of the original main number. Uppercase letters are significantly less common for house numbers but are also in use in some municipalities and addresses. Our range covers the most common letters required for private residential addresses.
Legal obligation: complete address on the facade
In Germany, homeowners are legally obliged to display their house number clearly visible on the facade. If the official address includes a letter suffix, this letter is part of the complete address and must therefore also be visible on the facade. A missing or illegible address can result in emergency services being unable to locate the building in an emergency situation. The complete display of the house number and letter is therefore not only a matter of aesthetics but also of safety.
Frequently asked questions about house numbers with letters
Does the letter have to be the same size as the house number?
For reasons of readability and a uniform appearance, we recommend choosing the house number and letter at the same height. A significantly smaller or larger letter size looks disproportionate and can impair readability from a distance. Our letters are matched to the heights of our house number series, so you do not need to make any adjustments.
What distance should there be between the house number and the letter?
A visually pleasing distance between the house number and the letter is usually about a quarter of the height of the house number. For a 20 cm house number, this would be a distance of about 4 to 5 cm. Too small a distance makes the address appear cramped, while too large a distance can lead to the house number and letter being perceived as two separate elements. The included mounting template facilitates correct positioning.
In which materials are the letters available?
Our letters are available in the same materials as the house numbers: powder-coated aluminum in black, white, and gold, chrome-plated aluminum, brushed stainless steel, and real concrete. Choose the material that matches your existing or planned house numbers to ensure a uniform appearance.
Can I also order a letter without a house number?
Yes. Our letters can also be ordered individually, regardless of whether the house numbers also come from Yessential. They are also suitable as an addition to existing house numbers if you subsequently need a letter suffix or want to replace a damaged letter.
How do I correctly mount the house number and letter next to each other?
First, mark the desired position of both elements with a spirit level and a pencil before drilling the first holes. Start with the house number and mount it completely before aligning the letter. This way, you can assess the visual distance when mounted and place the letter precisely next to it. Both elements are fastened with the same mounting kit consisting of screws, dowels, and spacers.
A complete address on the facade is both a legal obligation and a sign of care. Discover our letters and find the perfect addition to your house number.
