Chrome or stainless steel: what's the difference?
Chrome and brushed stainless steel look similar at first glance, but differ clearly in their surface texture. Stainless steel has a matte, uniform texture that reflects light diffusely. Chrome, on the other hand, has a highly polished, mirror-like surface that strongly focuses light, making it more eye-catching. For facades with a classic, representative claim, chrome is the more impactful choice. For modern, minimalist facades, stainless steel is usually preferred because it appears calmer and more understated. Both materials are weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use.
On which facades does chrome look best?
Chrome is particularly effective on light, neutral facades in white, light gray or sandstone. The glossy metallic tone stands out clearly and draws the eye. Chrome also acts as a deliberate contrast on dark brick in reddish-brown or dark gray. Chrome is particularly well suited to old buildings, classic villas and traditionally designed entrance areas with chrome-plated door handles, intercom systems or mailboxes. If you want to create a visually cohesive entrance area, choose house numbers and fittings in the same metal finish.
Chrome house numbers for mailboxes and small areas
Our smallest chrome variant, the Silvio Chrome in 60 mm, is self-adhesive and particularly suitable for mailboxes, doorbell plates or doors in apartment buildings. Its compact size makes it versatile wherever a drilled house number is too large or not possible. The Matteo Nickel in 10 cm and the Amato Chrome in 12.5 cm are drilled variants for facade mounting. All three models are precisely manufactured in their size class and have a uniform chrome coating without stains or streaks.
Frequently asked questions about chrome house numbers
Does chrome tarnish or develop verdigris?
No. Chrome coatings on aluminum do not form verdigris. Verdigris forms on copper and copper alloys such as brass. Our chrome house numbers have a synthetic chrome coating on aluminum that neither oxidizes nor tarnishes. The glossy surface remains permanently intact under normal weather conditions. In case of heavy soiling, a damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning.
How does chrome differ from silver and stainless steel in appearance?
Silver as a color is matte and uniform, without strong reflection. Brushed stainless steel has a fine, directional structure and reflects light in one direction. Chrome is highly polished and mirror-like, reflecting light from all angles. In direct comparison, chrome appears the most representative and striking, stainless steel the calmest and most timeless, and silver the most neutral. The choice depends on whether your house number should stand out or blend in harmoniously.
Which facade style is less suitable for chrome?
Chrome sometimes appears too representative and out of place on very modern, minimalist facades. For houses with simple, reduced architecture, we recommend stainless steel or black as more understated alternatives. Chrome comes into its own on classically designed facades, where a formal, glossy accent complements the overall look.
Can I install a chrome house number myself?
Yes. The self-adhesive Silvio Chrome variant in 60 mm is attached without tools: clean the surface, peel off the protective film, press on and align. The drilled Matteo and Amato models are attached with the included mounting kit. You will need a drill, a spirit level and a screwdriver. In both cases, installation is completed in a few minutes, even without expertise.
Which chrome house number suits an old building?
For classic old buildings with ornamented facades, we recommend the Amato Chrome in 12.5 cm. Its slightly raised, three-dimensional design with a clean shadow cast goes well with facades with architectural details. The size of 12.5 cm is easily legible for the typical proximity of old buildings to the street and appears proportionate to the facade.
